Plant Mapping: Food and Chemicals Production with Mix Processing

Example of a Mix Model digital value stream map for pharma, chemical and food processing

The Mix Processing VSM application is for plant level value stream mapping of dedicated or mixed model production lines for chemicals and food value streams. The Pharma VSM application should be used for Pharma bio production value streams

When to use eVSM’s Mix Processing application

Mix Processing is a valuable lean tool for usage in VSM events to improve mixed model production for processing value streams, like food and chemicals.

  • The Mix Processing VSM application is designed to increase the speed of each step in the improvement cycle (shown on the right), the quality of the improvement ideas generated, and clarity of the report out with current state, future state and implementation plan.
  • The application UNIQUELY SIMPLIFIES how you map and analyze multiple product variants with different demands, operational values and routings through shared resources. You don’t have to create a separate map for each product.
  • The map will help you remove waste and achieve an efficient balanced line for different demand scenarios. It highlights bottlenecks and losses in the value stream and permits “what-if” studies.

You can apply Mix Processing in 2 different ways

  • You can just sketch out the value stream (without metrics) and get agreement on it. This requires minimal training and is very fast.
  • You can enhance the sketch with data values that will then automatically calculate lead time, capacity and resource utilization values and visualize them via automatic charts.

Evaluating Mix Processing against other approaches and tools

Targeted improvements for lean deployments

Process industries pose unique challenges for plant value stream mapping, many of which are documented in Peter King's books "Value Stream Mapping for Process Industries" and "Lean for Process Industries". The Quick Processing application has been designed after review of these publications and we are grateful to Peter for his insights based on decades of work with DuPont and later as an independent consultant. In addition to these books here are some resources to help you evaluate the Quick Processing application

Why eVSM wins almost ALL evaluations for VSM in Process Industries

It is DESIGNED from the outset to support the terminology and calculation needed to create maps for process industries and simplifies mapping of mixed-model production lines with shared assets
